Sigurd Rompza

SIGURD ROMPZA

Born in 1945 in Bildstock, Germany, lives and works in Germany.

The artist must renew the sense of autonomy in their work. Their goal is linked to a subjective interaction: it must resonate, the viewer sharing with the artist the color-form that they appropriate with their own codes and sensory experience. Sigurd Rompza is one of the rare artists who reflects on and contextualizes artistic theory in order to ensure the artistic gesture. This raises the fundamental question about the artistic element: who shows what to whom, with what, and how?

Text by Bernd Philippi

Sigurd Rompza emphasizes that he encourages viewer participation in his work, much like a whole generation of 20th-century artists. At the heart of this participation lies the eye's natural movement as it analyzes what it sees in space. The linear relief of the form, here playing on the flatness of the wall, allows the eye to follow its development, and the viewer unconsciously participates in this movement. His wall-mounted light objects are, in fact, colored forms that instruct the eye on the emerging movement of the volume.
