Former director of the Grenoble Museum, president of the Musée d'Orsay, and professor at the Sorbonne, art historian Serge Lemoine, who has curated numerous exhibitions on abstraction, has consistently written on his preferred subject—geometric abstract art—since the late 1960s. His newly published book brings together 400 texts devoted to this movement, from 1969 to the present day. Many studies focus on historical figures such as Mondrian, Herbin, Schwitters, Van Doesburg, Morellet, and Aurélie Nemours. They examine movements such as Kinetic Art, Purism, and Minimal Art and their key figures, highlighting the importance of specific scenes in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Latin America, as well as groups such as Zero, Nouvelles Tendances, and GRAV. In thirty chapters, Serge Lemoine explores the theoretical and artistic challenges of geometric abstraction, while highlighting the diversity of practices that have shaped this language, from painting and sculpture to architecture with Mies van der Rohe and Gropius, and even in the applied arts. An illustrated section of nearly 130 works accompanies this collection of texts, offering a rich visual journey through the major stages and multiple expressions of geometric abstraction.
