Art Cologne

From April 11 to 14, 2019

It's the year of Vasarely! After contributing by lending several major works from the Lahumière collection to the Staedel Museum in Frankfurt, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and our gallery, we are delighted to present a selection of beautiful pieces at our booth in Cologne this year. The Staedel exhibition traced the development of Vasarely's artistic journey from his early work to his kinetic art. The Centre Pompidou exhibition focused primarily on the "Vasarely phenomenon" when he was at the height of his popularity in the 1960s and 70s. His printmaking and monumental works were a way for him to make himself visible and accessible to a wider audience. Anne and Jean-Claude Lahumière were publishers during those years and worked with Vasarely and his screen printer, Wilfredo Arcay. Kinetic art was at its height in Europe, and it was at this time that Anne and Jean-Claude Lahumière discovered a portion of Vasarely's work that was no longer being exhibited—specifically, his pieces from the 1950s. Over time, they built up a significant collection of works from this period. We will be presenting some pieces from this time, as well as some later works.
In another section of the booth, we will revisit some themes from our past exhibitions at the gallery, such as "Particulières," a theme featuring works by Aurélie Nemours, whose catalogue raisonné has just been published, paintings by Ode Bertrand, and sculptures by Isabelle de Gouyon Matignon. Another development, spurred by the publication of the catalogue raisonné of Günter Fruhtrunk's work, has led us to exhibit a large and powerful piece by this artist, from the Lahumière collection.
We haven't forgotten our contemporary artists such as Nicholas Bodde, Claude Pasquer, and Jean-François Dubreuil, who remain highly valued by our collectors.
