Art Cologne
Siegfried Kreitner, Timo Nasseri, Victor Vasarely, Sigurd Rompza, Jean Leppien, Auguste Herbin
From November 17th to 19th, 2023
We are happy to welcome you back for the 56th edition of the Cologne trade fair.
We will return to the group exhibitions organized at the gallery since the beginning of the year. In particular, on "Immobile Mobility" where the viewer is no longer a simple observer, they will have to train their gaze to seek and find what the immobile work can offer them in terms of movement, with the works of Siegfried Kreitner, Timo Nasseri and Victor Vasarely (1908-1997).
In a different vein, that of color, several works by Sigurd Rompza will be presented. However, at a fair, it is difficult to properly showcase this subtle work, which only truly comes into its own in the changing daylight. The colors in Rompza's works, depending on the viewing angle, the lighting, and the viewer's curiosity, can evoke a chromatic experience.
Also on display will be works by Jean Leppien (1910-1991), a student of Kandinsky and Albers at the Bauhaus. He gradually distanced himself from the influences of Kandinsky and Albers, developing a focus on crosses and, most notably, his famous circles, which he called UFOs (unidentified flying objects). From the outset, his choice of palette was heavily influenced by his surroundings. His numerous stays in the South of France captivated him; the blue skies and the luminous landscapes—red, green, yellow—ultimately anchored him in Roquebrune, where he found a studio. There is no systematic approach to his compositions or his palette choices, even as his work becomes more minimalist. It is no longer Albers's teachings that predominate, but simply his own sensibility and his Mediterranean environment. His humor and keen eye led him to say of a painting he had made, that it had to stay on the wall under his gaze long enough to know if what he had just painted was really a painting.
Auguste Herbin (1888-1960), who will benefit from a retrospective exhibition in Paris at the Musée Montmartre in April 2024, to which we are lending our support, will be present at the stand with some works on paper and an oil on canvas.
