From June 18 to 21, 2015

Dear friends of the gallery,

Forty-six years ago, at the first Art Basel fair in 1969, we were already presenting Jean Dewasne with a series of 14 silkscreen prints, "The Long March," published in 1966. That same year, Harald Szeemann, the renowned curator and director of Swiss museums, organized Dewasne's first museum exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern. At the fair, the enthusiastic Mr. Szeemann introduced us to numerous collectors and art lovers, many of whom purchased our portfolio.
For the past 46 years, we have exhibited continuously in Basel, and we are particularly proud to present an exceptional work by this artist this year.

"The Apotheosis of Marat"

1951, lacquer on aluminium, 1.68 m high and 5.68 m long, signed and dated.

This piece belonged to the prestigious collection of Louis Bogaerts of Knokke, Belgium, who had a house built specifically to house his artworks. Regarding the placement of this particular piece in his home, Mr. Bogaerts reasoned as follows: "I calculated: if I want to properly position the 6-meter-long Dewasne painting depicting the Apotheosis of Marat, I need a panel of such and such length and height to the left of the door."
Here is a passionate collector who prioritizes his artworks and uses architecture to showcase them, much like Mr. Beyeler and his foundation.

Alongside this work, several pieces from the 1950s by artists such as Victor Vasarely , Emile Gilioli , and Jean Deyrolle. We will also pay tribute to Gottfried Honegger, whose retrospective opens at the Centre Pompidou in Paris on June 23rd, as well as to our dear friend Hans Jörg Glattfelder, who was honored with a remarkable retrospective last year at the Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich. Of course, we will not forget our contemporary artists, such as Jean-François Dubreuil, Jean-Michel Gasquet (whose exhibition is currently on display at the gallery), and Renaud Jacquier Stajnowicz, who completed a monumental project at the end of last year at the Espace de l'Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux.
We look forward to your visit and send you our warmest regards.

Anne and Diane Lahumière
